Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei had become separated and lost touch with one another at Xuzhou. Zhang Fei occupied Gucheng and gained control of it. Liu Bei first sought refuge with Yuan Shao and then went to Zhang Fei. Guan Yu left Cao Cao and guarded Liu Bei’s wives to Gucheng to reunite with Liu Bei and Zhang Fei after feigning to surrender to Cao Cao.
