Yangzhou is reputed as the hometown of puppetry, and its rod puppetry enjoys as much popularity as Quanzhou’s marionettes and Zhangzhou’s glove puppetry. Originating from areas in Taixing County, Yangzhou puppetry has maintained a comprehensive art form that combines sculpture art and manipulatory art to the largest extent. Male martial puppets are usually presented with a white face, forceful and dignified appearance, and primarily wear armor with flags to indicate their identity. When they come on stage, they hold one hand high and make a fist the other to evoke a certain feeling. They wear a serious expression on their face but not too heavy, giving a visual impression of righteousness and solemnity.
