Female Puppet – Rod Puppetry
Rod Puppetry is one of the most widely distributed types of puppetry in China. It consists of a head, body rod, shoulder plate, hand, and hand rod. Guangdong Rod Puppetry was introduced in the Yuan Dynasty. This picture shows a female puppet often seen in traditional puppetry, whose expression is delivered delicately by finely carved eyes and eyebrows. Devices are installed into the head, which can open or close the eyes or rotate the eyeballs, allowing the puppet to emote. The hand rod is set inside the loose garment, which facilitates performing a wide variety of flexible movements and creating scenes that come to life.
